So what exactly is an A-Ganger? According to All The Wacky Submarine Terms You Never Knew You Wanted To Know, an A-Ganger is a conventional Machinist’s Mate who works on non-nuclear machinery like scrubbers, burners, and the diesel engine—primarily throughout the forward part of the boat. Known as knuckle-draggers, tough guys, and by tradition and right, the most profane individuals on any submarine. These legends elevate cursing to an art form—reaching levels undreamed of by mere sonar techs, storekeepers, and yeomen.

Both sides of the coin feature the same bold design: two mermaids seated on one of the propeller blades of a submarine—a nod to the grit, mystery, and deep-sea mythos that surround A-Gangers and their world.
