The Distinguished Flying Cross is awarded to officers or enlisted members who stand out through heroic or extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight. Recipients of this award join a proud legacy of aviators that dates back to 1927. Going beyond the call of duty, these brave and fiercely determined individuals put themselves at risk in defense of America’s skies and freedom.
This 1.75" coin commemorates the bravery and selfless service of America’s most skilled aviators whose acts of heroism help keep the country safe.
The obverse of the coin bears the bronze cross on which is superimposed a four-bladed propeller. The reverse displays the text “Heroism or extraordinary achievement while participating in an aerial flight,” with space for engraving the recipient’s name, branch of service and the date. The Distinguished Flying Cross challenge coin is minted in a bronze alloy and given an antique finish.
